Evaluation of EU legislation on farm animal welfare

The EC launches an evaluation, also called the "Fitness Check," of EU legislation on the welfare of farm animals.
1 June 2020

On May 20, 2020, the Commission adopted the Farm to Fork Strategy. This plan foresees ambitious actions on animal welfare in the context of a more sustainable agriculture. One of these actions concerns launching an evaluation, also called “Fitness Check,” of the EU legislation on the welfare of farm animals.

This Fitness Check aims to help the Commission to assess the relevance of its current legislative framework, which provides one of the highest standards in the world for the preservation of animal welfare, composed of five EU Directives and two EU Regulations, covering animal welfare on farms, during transport and at slaughter.

The Commission described the general outline of this review in a roadmap, which has just been published. The comments received will help to define the further details of this evaluation of EU legislation on farm animal welfare.

The results will be used to review EU standards on animal welfare as well as other Commission initiatives in this area.
