One simple formula tells you how to prepare for your pig farm design!

 
    For pig farmer beginners, it is their main concern and also headache to decide how to build the pig pen reasonably and economically. How many farrowing crates, gestation crates, mating pen, etc. should be prepared for the pigs to minimize the investment? Now, we take 100 sows farm as example and show you how simple it is to make out the crates number.
 
 
 
 
1. Farrowing Crates
100*2.3/52=Approx.5
5*5/1=
25 (farrowing crates quantity)
 
Explanation:
2.3: Average of 2.3 litters per sow per year
52 : 1 year = 52 weeks
5   : 1 week (for expectant sow)+
      3 weeks (piglet from birth to weaning)+
      1 week (for empty crates disinfection)
1   : each crates for 1 sow
 


 
2. Mating Crates
100*2.3/52=Approx.5  
5*6/1=
30 (mating crate quantity)
 
Explanation:
6    : 1 week (for mating)
       +4 weeks (for pregnant confirm ) 
       +1 week (for empty crates disinfection)
1    : each crates for 1 sow


 
3. Gestation Units
100*2.3/52=Approx.5
16.3-4-1+1=12.3
5*12.3/1=
62 (Gestation Units quantity)
 
Explanation:
12.3: one sow pregnancy is about 16.3 weeks (114 days)
      -4 weeks (first 4 weeks in mating crates )
      -1 week ( the last 1 week in farrowing crates)
      +1 week (for empty crates disinfection)
1   : each crates for 1 sow


 
4. Young Sow Units
100*30%/52*9/5=1 (young sow unit quantity)
 
Explanation:
30%: The annual update rate of sow is 30%
9   : stay 9 weeks before mating.
5   : each unit for 5 gilt


 


 
5. Boar Units
For natural breeding: 100/20=
5 (boar unit quantity)
For artificial insemination: 100/40=
3 (boar unit quantity)

Explanation:
20  : 1 boar corresponds to 20 sows in natural breeding
40  : 1 boar corresponds to 40 sows in artificial insemination
1   : each unit for 1 boar


 
6. Young Boar Units
5*100%/52*9=
1 (young boar unit quantity)

Explanation:
5   : 5 boars correspond to 100 sows
100%: Mating boar replacement rate is 100% for one year for lots of farms.
9   : young boars stay in young boar unit for 9 weeks before mating



 
7. Nursing Pig Unit
100*2.3=230
230*10/52*8/20=
18 (nursing unit quantity)
 
Explanation:
10  : 1 farrow is about 10 weaning piglet
8    : 7 weeks staying in the unit
      +1 week for disinfection
20  : each unit for 20 nursery pigs
 



 
8. Fattening Pig crates
100*2.3=230
230*10/52*16/20=
36 ( fattening unit quantity)
 
Explanation:
10  : each farrow is about 10 weaning piglet
16  : 15 weeks (from 25kg to 100kg)
      +1 week (empty crates disinfection)
20  : each unit for 20 finishing pigs
