Provinces in China stop imports of live pigs to curb ASF spread

According to the "Guidelines for Strengthening Measures for the Prevention and Control of African Swine Fever" issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs in 2020, starting April 1, 2021, China will gradually restrict the transportation of live pigs. With the exception of breeding pigs and piglets, other live pigs will not be allowed to leave the region. Live pigs leaving the area must be selected and transported through designated routes after passing inspection.

According to incomplete statistics from reporters of the Beijing News, in 2021, Sichuan, Hunan, Hainan, Guangxi, Shandong, and other places have introduced new regulations for the transportation of pigs in various provinces.

    1. Hainan Province has "stopped the importation of slaughter pigs from other provinces to the island" starting April 1st.

    2. Hunan Province has suspended the importation of live pigs from other provinces except for breeding pigs and piglets used for continued breeding starting March 17th, and emphasized that "it is strictly forbidden to import live pigs from other provinces."

    3. In the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, starting April 1, the transfer of pigs from other provinces to Guangxi will be suspended except for breeding pigs and piglets from other provinces in the Central South Region (Guangdong, Hainan, Fujian, Hunan, and Jiangxi).
