They seek to sign a free trade agreement between the US and Brazil

"It is important that nothing in the agreement between Mercosur and the European Union be an impediment to a free trade agreement between Brazil and the United States," said Ross, after participating in an event in Sao Paulo, on the occasion of the centenary of the Chamber of United States Commerce in Brazil (AmCham).

The US official also stressed that in the process of negotiations for a free trade agreement between the United States and Brazil, several stages have yet to be completed and there is no estimated date to close the agreement, reports El Heraldo.

“Many components are needed (to reach an agreement). However, we never concluded the bilateral investment treaty between Brazil and the United States, which would be a logical precursor to any type of Free Trade Agreement. There are many things that must be done in the business dialogue, ” he added.

Ross would later meet in Brasilia with Jair Bolsonaro, president of Brazil; the ministers of Economy, Paulo Guedes, and Infrastructure, Tarcisio Freitas, and members of the business community.

At the end of last June, the EU and the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) reached a Strategic Partnership Agreement, after 20 years of negotiations. The treaty still needs to be ratified by the congresses of the member countries of both blocks.

Mercosur is made up of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.
